Cass County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children) hosted its 12th annual dinner and auction Friday, June 15, at Gable Hill in Marcellus, Michigan. One hundred people attended this year’s event. The evening began with a reception hosted by the Honorable Susan L. Dobrich.  A delicious beef tenderloin and chicken with salsa dinner catered by the Mason Jar of Benton Harbor followed the reception. The rest of the festivities included a live auction featuring a variety of items, a call to the heart for additional donations and a raffle drawing.  All of the dollars brought in by the dinner and auction of will be used to support CASA in training community volunteers to be the voices and advocates for foster care children as they move through the court system.

This year’s event featured a special recognition of all of the CASA volunteers and the services that they provide. Over 150 children are currently in the foster care system in Cass County.  CASA volunteers served  48 of those children in 2017 through their support of their assigned child during the time that they are foster care and serving as the child’s voice during court hearings. Cass County CASA volunteer, Doug Pearson,  spoke of the importance of the supportive adults during a child’s experience in the foster care system. He emphasized how one person can make all of the difference for a child who is often moved many times throughout their time in care. CASA volunteers are often that one person in a foster care child’s life.

The CASA Board would like to thank everyone who participated in this successful event. We appreciate the generosity of our community and their willingness to support such a worthy cause. Cass County CASA was started by the Honorable Susan Dobrich of the Cass County Family Court in 1995. CASA is a not-for-profit agency of trained volunteers from the community who are appointed by the judge to advocate for abused and neglected children in foster care.
